July 01 Canada DayI have been back and forth to the cabin which is better than not being there at all, but I'm wondering when I acquired all these responsibilites that keep calling me back to the city. I'm very nostalgic for the days when I packed up the kids on the last day of school and stayed out there for 6 weeks!! Our weather has been pretty good, not too hot and cooling off nicely at night. The strong wind kept us off the lake one day but we've been fishing and eating those yummy pickerel fresh out of the lake.
My appointment with the dietician/diabetes educator went really well. She said all my numbers are really good... the only one that is sometimes a teeny bit above what it should be is my fasting blood sugar and as that one is before I have even eaten anything, I really don't know what I can do for that. She told me to carry on with what I've been doing, I don't need any medication, and just need to check my glucose levels every 2 weeks. Oh, yah, and I've lost another pound so gimme a high five!! (Actually, the dietician said I don't need to lose weight!!)
June 25 The Heat is ON!Yah, we got heat now with a vengeance and everything is growing so fast including the weeds. I just about gave myself heatstroke yesterday because I worked too long in the garden in the middle of the day. It really can't be helped though because I do NOT get up early and in the evening the mosquitos are looking for me. I have made progress and it's looking less like a jungle out there now. Still lots of work to do though. I need to pick more rhubarb and maybe make a yummy dessert but I will wait til I've had my appointment with the dietician and see what she says about my blood glucose which as far as I can tell is awesome. Yes, I have been a very good girl! June 23 TuesdayI had a long weekend at the cabin and it was really nice weather. We bought a wake board for the kids so Cass tried that out and is pretty happy with it. I think I will just continue with my job as spotter... it's a little too late for me to take up that sport. I went to the store this afternoon for birthday cake for our manager's birthday. One of the staff had made a fruit pizza that was SO YUMMY I was a little worried about my glucose reading after that so I walked a mile before I took it and Voila - it was good! Next week I'm going for my appointment with the dietician and I'm determined to be taken off the "pre-diabetic" list or at least told there's no need for medication. My flowers are growing like crazy... we've had rain and heat... and all the veggies are coming except the carrots so I replanted them. It's a little late for that so maybe I'll just end up with baby carrots. June 16 TuesdayWe finally had to turn on the A/C!! I wish we didn't have to but it's better than having the furnace running. We went to Garth's nieces' wedding on Saturday which was nice and then instead of going to the gift opening on Sunday (which I always try to avoid) we went to watch his brother in law drag racing. I know, I know, not my favorite thing to do but preferable to gift opening. He did really well, getting all the way to the final. It was a nice warm day and enough breeze to keep the bugs away. I was pretty tired by the time we got home as it's a 3 hour drive.
A tragic accident occurred here on Friday night. Three young boys, 16 & 17 years old crashed and were all killed. One is the son of friends of ours so we have a very sad funeral to attend on Friday. June 12 Summer has arrivedFinally... our short and sweet summer has arrived! Yesterday was nice so I cut the grass and even watered part of it. I usually don't water the lawn but we had the lawn care guys here and they said to water it a couple days after so I did. Even though it rained a bit in the last few days it's still really dry. The temps are supposed to be in the mid to high 20's - a real heat wave - I hope I don't end up complaining that it's too hot!!LOL. I even feel confident about putting my tomato plants out in the garden today. But I'll take my coffee out on the deck and read for a bit, first things first, right? June 08 MondayGood news and bad news... the bad is the crappy cold weather here (although we didn't get the snow that fell in the Western part of the province) the good is that the mosquitos haven't hatched!! Hey, I gotta try to see the silver lining or I'm just gonna cry. We went to the cabin and roasted our hot dogs over the fire outside then came inside and lit a fire in the stove to warm up. We went fishing Saturday and caught a couple pickerel for supper - yummy. Sunday it was not only cold but rainy so we packed up and came home. This coming weekend is supposed to be nice but we have to go to Saskatoon for Garth's neices wedding so no lake for us for a couple weeks. I guess I should try to get some of my overdue bookwork done while it's cold so that I can enjoy the nice weather when it finally gets here.
One thing the weekend was good for was reading... I finished The Labyrinth then started and finished The Kite Runner. June 05 FridayWe had a hard frost last night or so I am told by those who get up early enough to see it. I of course sleep til its at least a couple of degrees above 0. Good thing I brought in my tomato plants and flower pots. We are going out to the cabin tonight so I think the plants will just have to stay in the house all weekend because there's a frost warning for tonight too. The full moon is on Sunday so I am confident that the weather will warm up after that. Good news on the weight loss effort - 4 pounds - but geez that was hard! Still a few more to go before I see the dietician and hopefully there will be a drop in those pesky glucose numbers too. June 02 TuesdayFriday I planted my garden and some more flowers in the wind which deceived me into forgetting about the sun and I burnt the top of my back. You'd think after all the sunburns I've had in my life I would learn... Got out to the cabin in the early evening and had our traditional first night out supper - roasted (Harvest) weiners. Saturday we went out for our first fishing day in the new boat and I caught the first fish (also the next 3 but who's counting?) I picked up french fries from the store and Garth fried those fillets and they were SO good. We went out again on Sunday evening after the wind finally died down a bit and Garth got a couple more but as hard as I tried, I could NOT get a fish into the boat. They were very cagey and ate many minnows off my hook but did not allow me to catch them. Yesterday was cool and windy again so I came back to town. I made Asparagus Fettucini for supper and it was delish if I do say so myself. I used the asparagus that I grew in my garden. It took about 4 years to finally start producing but it sure is nice to just go out and cut it off and cook it up. Yummy. How do you think my "diet" is going???LOL. May 28 ThursdayI finally went out and bought some flowers and tomato plants and started gardening, but hey, give me a break... it just quit snowing recently, lol. I'm getting frustrated by my lack of weight loss even after a month of really improving my eating but trying not to get too discouraged which could lead to an awesome binge, haha. It would just be so motivating to see a change in the number on the scale. I met my new neighbor today who seems very nice. They bought a real fixer upper behind us and have started working on it. I wish them luck because I didn't think it was even worth fixing but they're going for it. The weather is supposed to be nice for the weekend so we're heading out to the cabin tomorrow. May 25 MondayAfter a little bit of warm weather and some rain overnight things are finally starting to get green here. I hope that inspires me to get a little gardening done and a few flower pots to brighten things up a bit. I went out for lunch today with my Mom and brother and Cass then a little more visiting before they headed out for shopping. I mowed the grass and it didn't snow this time! May 24 SundayOur weather seemingly has finally turned the corner and is more like spring. Just in the nick of time for the wedding yesterday which was very nice. We had lots of fun and the new hip handled the dancing very well. We haven't danced that much for a long time. Stayed out WAY too late for people of our age... you'd think we'd know better by now but some people literally never learn, haha. Today was nice too so I finally did some work in my flower garden, pruned the rose bushes, watered, etc. I am really tuckered out now and will be calling it an early night to make up for last night. May 22 FridayWe just had a 15 minute blizzard!!! Clumps of snow were falling fast and furious but the temp was just above freezing so it melted as it fell. Still pretty disheartening though. We're going to a wedding tomorrow and the day is sounding good according to the forecast so I hope they are right about that. I did payroll this morning and now have some banking and errands to do then maybe a coffee break with my friend before I cook supper for my Mom and my brother who is here visiting for a few days! May 18 MondayWe finally packed up and went to the cabin on Saturday afternoon. There was no snow there by the time we arrived but it was chilly enough for me to immediately start a fire in the stove. By the time I had unpacked all the food and put it away it had warmed up enough for me to curl up on the couch in front of the fire and have a little nap. We roasted hot dogs in the stove for supper and lazed about. Sunday turned out to be a really nice day although it was cloudy. We took the new boat out for a cruise around the lake. The water was nice and smooth and we listened to satellite radio... yah, you heard me. Our boat has satellite radio!!! haha. Of course I settled in for the 2 hour finale of Desperate Housewives. This morning the temp had plunged back down to just above freezing so after breakfast I cleaned and packed up and headed back home. May 15 FridayThis weekend has been traditionally our first of the summer at the cabin but since we got about 8 inches of snow last night we're staying home tonight to wait and see if tomorrow will be better. May 14 There's a first time for everythingEven though I've mowed the lawn countless times, today was the first time I did it while it was SNOWING!!! When I started it wasn't but just after I did enough that it would be noticeable if I quit the white stuff started coming down so I had to finish. My hands were so cold when I was done and now they're just burning. I guess I should have come in for mitts... that would have been another first. May 12 TuesdayYesterday was a beautiful day here until midafternoon. The weather stayed nice but that was when I had to go to the dentist. I had broken off a tiny corner of my back molar on some popcorn and so I got the whole (big) filling redone. It wasn't bad till the freezing came out and I kept getting shooting pains from it like I had bit on tin foil. The dentist told me it would be "sensitive", hmmm that's like when the doctor tells you you will feel some "discomfort". Masters of understatement those guys are...It was horrible but it's getting better today. I guess I'm paying the price for my lifelong sweets habit in more ways than one. I had a couple fairly high blood glucose readings which kind of bummed me out but inspired me to get even more serious about my eating. I'm surprised that I'm not craving sugar & salt more but I think when your health is being threatened it's just not so appealing as it was. I just hope I can improve things myself and not have to go on medication. May 08 Tell me again what the date is...The reason I ask is that it's SNOWING!!! I was looking at that dismal sight when I saw a robin land on the bird bath hoping to have a drink or a splash and the water was frozen solid so he was probably just as disappointed as I was. In order to feel better about things I had coffee with both my "coffee" friends, and that definitely helped. I was doing a bit of shopping and almost bought myself a bouquet of flowers for Mother's Day but since I had already gone for my mothers day pedicure (compliments of me) and am planning to buy myself something else too, I told myself not to get carried away! I'm cooking for my Mom and my Mom's friend (her children live far away) and my Mother in law on Sunday. I think I'll do lasagna or something I can prepare ahead of time so as not to overwork myself that day - after all... I'm a mom too. I'm going to buy a cake for dessert because if I bake one of my favorites it'll be too hard for me to resist overindulging just when I'm really really really trying to eat healthier in light of my pre diabetic status. I'm supposed to lose 10 pounds which I've been wanting to do anyway. Cass is home now which helps because she is way more into the kind of "diet" I need to follow than Mr. T is. May 06 WednesdayWell, it's official. I've been diagnosed as pre-diabetic. My glucose level is only 1 measly point above what it should be but I got sent to the diabetes education class this morning. I've got the testing meter and have to do that for a few days to see what the levels are at different times of the day. I'm not getting any medication yet, just trying to improve the diet. I'm already a pretty dedicated exerciser so I'm ok there. I found out though that a family history is a risk factor and not just the first degree relatives but any family. As two of my aunts are diabetic this could be some genetics working against me. My mom was quick to point out that it's all on my dad's side of the family!!lol.
May 02 Saturday The other night I foolishly started down the stairs from the second floor without turning the light on and somehow missed the top step and took a tumble. I found myself lying on the "landing" and I might have used a bad word before I realized I hadn't hurt a thing!! Could it be that what I consider a little layer of fat is maybe a little thicker than I will admit??lol. It served me well this time anyway.
Today was a nice sunny day and while I still haven't done any yard work I did find time to lounge on the deck for a while. May 01 Home AloneI'm having a little home alone time while Mr T is off on another golf trip. I'm certainly enjoying the not cooking part. The last snowfall has melted and the grass is starting to get green. A few shoots are coming in my flower bed so that makes me happy. I had my mammogram the other day and I think the new digital machine is a bit better than the old as far as the compression factor, haha. I have a Dr appointment on Monday and then I have to go to a class on Wednesday as my Dr thinks I'm pre-diabetic or at least my glucose is supposedly a bit high so I need to nip that in the bud. My sweet tooth is gonna have to be tamed somehow I guess. I mailed off my cheques for the income tax that was owing at the very last minute but I can't complain about that this year as Garth had that very expensive surgery done so no whining from me. |
